Let’s make sure you have all the answers.
We’ve answered the questions we hear most often from marketing leaders considering coaching for the first time — from how matching works to what confidentiality actually means in practice.
CMO Coaches is the only executive coaching network comprised entirely of former Chief Marketing Officers who are also certified executive coaches. Our coaches have led marketing organizations across startups, Fortune 500 companies, and global enterprises — giving them firsthand experience with the challenges and pressures marketing leaders face today. We don't just understand coaching methodology; we've lived the role.
We maintain a network of seven to eight certified executive coaches. The matching process begins with a complimentary 30-minute discovery call, during which we learn about your goals, working style, and the challenges you're navigating. Based on that conversation, we recommend a coach we believe is well-suited to your needs and arrange a one-hour introductory session with them.
If you feel it's the right fit, we move forward with a coaching agreement and schedule. In the rare event it isn't, we'll introduce you to another coach until you're fully confident in your match.
Both. Every CMO Coach holds a recognized executive coaching certification and is a member of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) — the leading global credentialing body for professional coaches. This means you're working with someone who brings both deep marketing leadership experience and rigorous, structured coaching methodology.
Executive Coaching is a one-on-one engagement tailored entirely to your individual goals — the most personalized and intensive of our offerings.
Group Coaching brings together a cohort of marketing leaders to work through shared challenges, learn from one another, and build peer relationships alongside structured coaching.
Career Coaching is a focused program for marketing leaders navigating a job search or career transition, combining coaching methodology with practical guidance on positioning, narrative, and role strategy.
Not sure which is right for you? Our discovery call is a good place to start — we'll help you figure it out.
Not at all. We work with current CMOs, senior marketing executives aspiring to the top marketing role, and leaders from adjacent functions — including COOs and CEOs — who want to strengthen their leadership effectiveness. Whether you're stepping into your first CMO role or a seasoned executive looking to sharpen your edge, CMO Coaches is built for you.
Yes. Our coaches have worked across the full spectrum — early-stage startups, mid-market companies, global enterprises, and nonprofit organizations. The leadership challenges marketing executives face are remarkably consistent regardless of company size, and our coaching is tailored to your specific context.
The most common areas clients focus on are building executive presence and confidence, strengthening strategic thinking and communication skills, and navigating senior stakeholder relationships — including CEOs, boards, and investors. At the start of each engagement, you and your coach will identify one or two professional development goals and build a structured plan to work through them together over the course of your sessions.
Our standard coaching engagement runs a minimum of six months. Research — and our own eight years of experience — consistently shows that meaningful, lasting professional development requires sustained effort and accountability. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes, held every other week, giving you time to apply what you've worked on between meetings.
The majority of sessions are conducted virtually via video (Zoom or similar platforms). When a client and coach are in the same city, we encourage beginning with an in-person meeting to establish the relationship, then alternating between in-person and virtual as makes sense for both parties.
Progress is tracked against the specific development goals established at the start of your engagement. Your coach will check in regularly on your self-assessed progress and will typically have a brief conversation with your manager at the beginning of the engagement — and again at the midpoint — to ensure the work is translating into observable change in the workplace.
Our goal is for both you and your manager to notice a meaningful difference in the one or two areas you've focused on by the end of the initial six-month engagement.
Pricing is set by individual coaches and varies based on their background, expertise, and the type of engagement. CMO Coaches offers pricing designed to serve a wide range of organizations, and our rates are competitive with leading executive coaching networks in the U.S.
Career Coaching is offered at a lower price point specifically to make professional coaching accessible to marketers who are in transition or actively managing a job search. Contact us for specific pricing — we're happy to discuss options that fit your situation.
In most cases, yes — the employer covers the cost, since the organization benefits directly from its leader's development. Some executives share the cost with their company or pay independently. We encourage all clients to explore sponsorship with their organization; most companies have professional development budgets that cover exactly this kind of investment.
Absolutely. We have structured engagements for organizations looking to provide coaching to multiple members of their leadership team and would be glad to discuss how a program like that could be designed for your company. Please reach out to us directly to explore this.
Executive coaching is about developing you — your thinking, your leadership behaviors, and your long-term professional capabilities. A consultant is engaged to solve a business problem and deliver recommendations; their expertise drives the output. Mentoring can be valuable, but it's typically informal, depends on the mentor's availability and experience, and lacks the structured accountability of a coaching engagement. Coaching is more disciplined and more personal — and the progress belongs entirely to you.
Yes, and this is one of the most valued aspects of working with a coach who has held the CMO role themselves. Your coach will serve as a trusted sounding board for your current marketing plans, strategic decisions, and organizational challenges — someone to pressure-test your thinking before you bring it to your management team or board.
That said, we are not marketing consultants hired to solve problems on your behalf. The goal is always to build your own judgment and capabilities, so that over time you need the sounding board less.
It depends on the nature of your goals and the effort you invest between sessions. That said, most clients notice meaningful shifts in their thinking and approach well before the six-month mark. By the end of the initial engagement, we are confident that both you and your manager will see significant improvement in the one or two professional development areas you've focused on.
Completely. Everything discussed between you and your CMO Coach is strictly confidential and is never shared with any third party. At the beginning of an engagement, your coach will typically speak briefly with your manager to align on the development goals you'll be working toward — but what you share in your coaching sessions remains entirely between you and your coach.
Yes. Engagements are invoiced in two installments: one at the start and one at the beginning of month four. If, at the end of the first 90 days, you feel the coaching isn't delivering value, you are not obligated to continue — and the second invoice would not be issued.
In eight years of working with clients, we've never had anyone take us up on this — but we believe it's important that every client has a genuine off-ramp if they need one.
We’re happy to talk through whether CMO Coaches is the right fit for you.
